Why is SSI (Self-Sovereign Identity) becoming a necessity and what potential it holds?

Jan Gerl, Blockchain developer & Project Manager at Netis

The common denominator of digital services today is that they are all “rental relationships” where users are dependent on the conditions set by various providers. In other words, the digital identity of a user, alone and outside of a particular web service, does not exist. For that, Jan will present the concept of SSI (Self-Sovereign Identity), which represents one of the possible innovations for secure online communication and personal data management. By giving users ownership over their personal information, SSI allows them to keep their data in one place and share them with digital services of their choice. As such, SSI eliminates the efforts to collect data that has already been gathered elsewhere and thereby simplifies procedures for logging into online systems.

Jan Gerl is a blockchain developer and an IT project manager in the field of blockchain, distributed storage and distributed computing at the company Netis. He holds a BSc degree in information science from the University of Ljubljana. He joined the team in 2018 to contribute in further advancement of Netis’ brand Aceblock, offering businesses a proprietary blockchain framework and innovative solutions in the field of cryptographical security and digital self-sovereign identity (SSI).
